How to choose the right ski + bindings package
Whether you're a fan of groomed runs, off-piste, or the snowpark, choosing the right ski + bindings package is essential to fully enjoy your time in the mountains. Here’s a simple guide to help you make the right choice based on your skiing style, skill level, and body type.
Define your skiing program
The type of ski mainly depends on your preferred terrain:
- Piste skis: Ideal for skiers who mostly stick to groomed trails. These skis, with a waist under 80 mm, offer excellent edge grip and high precision.
- All-mountain skis: Perfect for versatile use, these skis (80 to 100 mm waist) easily transition from piste to off-piste.
- Freeride skis: Designed for powder enthusiasts, these wide skis (90 to 120 mm waist) provide great float in deep snow.
- Freestyle skis: Built for snowparks and tricks, these skis offer good maneuverability and often feature double rockers for easier landings.
Choosing the right ski length
Ski length varies based on your skiing style and skill level:
- Piste skis: Choose skis 5 to 10 cm shorter than your height. For slalom-style skis (turn radius of 10 to 13 m), go even shorter (10 to 15 cm less).
- All-mountain skis: Select skis 0 to 5 cm shorter than your height, depending on whether you favor on-piste (-5 cm) or off-piste (same height).
- Freeride skis: Opt for skis from your height up to 10 cm longer, depending on the desired floatation.
- Freestyle skis: Choose skis close to your height for better agility.
Understanding camber and rocker
Camber and rocker influence how the ski behaves:
- Traditional camber: Offers excellent edge grip on hard snow, ideal for on-piste skiing.
- Rocker (reverse camber): Eases turn initiation and enhances float in powder.
- Double rocker: Present at both tip and tail, perfect for freestyle and off-piste, offering great maneuverability.
Choosing your ski bindings
Bindings are key to your safety and comfort:
- DIN setting: Must be adjusted to your weight, skill level, and skiing style.
- Compatibility: Ensure bindings are compatible with your ski boots.
- Binding type: Choose bindings specific to your discipline (piste, all-mountain, freeride, freestyle).
