How to choose the right snowboard goggles?

Depending on your level and weather conditions

Choosing a snow goggles is not random. It mainly depends on your riding style, brightness, and weather conditions. According to your level, special attention should be paid to the UV rating and the ambient brightness. Comfort and safety depend on this.

The different types of lenses

  • Category 0 lens: ideal for night outings, it is not tinted and lets through 80% of light. Avoid using it during the day.
  • Category 1 lens: slightly tinted, it lets through between 80% and 43% of light. Perfect for foggy or low-light conditions.
  • Category 2 lens: medium tint for optimal versatility. It filters between 43% and 18% of light, suitable for cloudy or changing weather.
  • Category 3 lens: dark tinted, it lets through between 18% and 8% of light. This is the perfect goggles for sunny days.
  • Category 4 lens: reserved for extreme conditions such as glaciers. It only lets through 8% of light. Intended for elite skiers.

OTG goggles: for glasses wearers

The OTG goggles are specially designed for skiers who wear prescription glasses. They feature a larger internal volume and foam cutouts at the temples to let the glasses’ arms pass through. These goggles guarantee excellent comfort without discomfort or cold air entering. You can enjoy your runs without compromise.

Lenses: spherical or cylindrical?

  • Spherical lens: 3D curved, it follows the natural shape of the eye for a wider field of vision. Recommended for freeride as it improves terrain perception. Be careful of possible visual distortions, especially for progressive lens wearers.
  • Cylindrical lens: curved on only two axes, it fits the shape of the face. Less distortion, but a reduced field of vision. This is the preferred option for regular piste skiers. It is also more affordable and brings a retro touch.

Removable lenses for more flexibility

Some models, like those from Smith, come with interchangeable lenses. This feature allows you to easily adapt your goggles to weather conditions: switch to a darker lens when the sun is strong, or remove the additional lens when it gets cloudy. A very practical solution for riders in all weather.

Anti-fog treatments: options to meet your expectations

For always clear visibility, most snow goggles include a double lens with anti-fog treatment. Ventilation may vary depending on the model. The highest performing versions offer optimal airflow, ideal for intensive skiers or long sessions.

Which size goggles to choose?

Well-fitted goggles ensure comfort and hold all day long. Size S fits children and slim faces, while size L is suited for wider faces or adults.

Brands to favor

Some brands stand out for the quality and technical features of their models:

  • Smith
  • Scott
  • Rossignol
  • Head
  • Julbo
  • Cébé

An essential equipment not to neglect

The snowboard goggles are much more than an accessory. They protect you from UV rays, wind, cold, and guarantee optimal visibility. According to your practice, visual needs and weather conditions, it is essential to choose the right model. Thanks to options like interchangeable lenses, specific screens or anti-fog treatments, you will definitely find the goggles adapted to your winter outings.
