The story of the Columbia brand began in North America, in the state of Oregon, back in 1938. That year, the Lamfrom family settled in Portland after fleeing Nazi Germany. The family patriarch founded a small hat company: the Columbia Hat Company. After his death, his son-in-law Neal Boyle took over the reins of the small family business. Eager to expand the scope of the Columbia label, he introduced protective clothing for hunters and fishermen to the market in the late 1960s. Following Neal’s passing in 1970, his wife Gertrude Boyle left her role as a housewife to become the company’s CEO. Supported by her eldest son, she launched, during the 1980s, a range of innovative outdoor apparel designed for open-air activities. Now known as Columbia Sportswear Company, the brand has become a global reference in the outdoor industry.
